Alone Together by Sheetal Mallar

I find life in bombay a mad circus, like in most big cities i am sure..Loneliness is an emotion i carry inside, I think as most of us who live here do..I am fascinated with what lies beneath the face we put on when we get out.

I found that this experience made me feel not so alone anymore..

Most of these people are friends of mine. Some of them are people who i have seen around often, who i had not really spoken to. But had sort of become my unspoken friends. Who i felt strangely connected with. Most of these are shot in the urban suburbs of bombay. Some of these people are from out of town, trying to make a living here. Many live in cramped spaces alone or with their parents. Most of these are shot in their homes or their personal spaces.I  felt, it was the only way the mask comes off for that little while..

About Sheetal

I started modeling at the age of seventeen. I was lost like most teenagers are that age and this sought of just happen. It was fun so, i decided to go with the flow. It has been an exciting and a fantastic journey. Before i knew it, eighteen years had passed.Though fashion and glamour was what my world seemed like, I felt like a voyeur.. The camera was always in my life. Though, i felt like i belonged on the other side.. It was a matter of time..

    Hi

Just need to say,,,many people are shooting this style and mood…i start reading this magazine from Bangalore, now i am in Delhi..i love this approach and the way you publish most Photo Essay..your list of photographer is great and i love all of them work…very fresh and very interesting images you always publish…Congrats..

BUT now tell me why this story, because she is famous model and having a new Camera with some expensive lenses,,,thats how you judge the photographs..they are just good photographs but not for the BLINDBOYS.ORG ..if you giving her break and i understand she can approach anyone and anybody.samll kid are taking pictures from Camera phone better than her..but you are not the one to publish this rubbish..i know you will hate me and you will send me mail,,its OK..

I am also a learning photographer and i learn most of the work from your magazine,,,,but i never dreamed in my life you will hurt my kind of student like this..

    Thanks n Regards

Atul i don’t quite understand your point of view. comes acorss as being harsh and insensitive. Our objective here in blindboys is not to be biased. In this essay there is a unity in the way the whole thing has been approached. They are understated and maybe that’s why you have this opinion about it. We don’t intend to take sides. that’s why there is forum- so that everyone one of us can join and discuss what we want to say.
I would love to pass on questions if you have to Sheetal. That way you can direct your point better.
    what do you say?

I find the comments of Atul very shortsighted and I don’t think he would comment the same to a photographer without such an impressive career as hers. The fact that Sheetal doesn’t even put up pictures from the modeling-world shows that she is interested in what’s out there and not how he would categorize her.

Atul, I have seen your website. The fact that you were manager of Olive should not work against your ambitions as a photographer. You shoot pictures of food and people working in your restaurant, which is quite predictable. I personally think your pictures are on the same level as the food in Olive, a place where I come quite often for drinks only.

I am very impressed with the pictures that Sheetal made. Some of the pictures are of people that I have seen around in Bombay. Not everyone recognizes these people, but they’re all characters that you would never catch in such a sensitive frame. Each one of them is in his own little world, taking of the mask for just a moment.

    Dear Sheetal,

Congratulations on your beautifull work. Im quite impressed with your portfolio. I have been following you for 5 years now, i know how much work, effort and passion you put into your work.
As for Atul, very chique to value your work of your fellow photographers that way. Everyone his own taste, who are you to judge.
As a photography lover, i know one thing, photographing people is a different league then photographing food or objects all together.
So good luck with your work Atul, you are going to need it.
Sheetal dont let this demotivate you, I love your work.

    Hello!

I don’t understand why Atul is reacting like this!!
I totally love this essay, the characters stay with me long after i have gone away from the page. The fact that they are not explained makes it feel more mysterious and adds to the melancholic tone of this work! big up!

sheetal…in this hectic life we lead in bombay there are very few that really cherish and support their peers…i love it when people step out of their mold and try their hands in other things…a creative person need not only be a “writer” “a designer” “a hairdresser” “a director”…there is so much more to life than just a “er..or..” attached to ones name….i am very happy for you and i stand by your vision…go gurlie go…
