The Farm by Johan Emanuelsson

Johan Emanuelsson debut book The Farm will be out on Journal under 2009/2010
Motivation from Scanpix when Johan recived an grant;

”For his creative and daring symbolism within which he mercilessly depicts his perception of his family and background. The symbolism of his imagery is permeated by an un-staged nerve that communicates both the weight and pain within the depiction of the environment he knows and originates from.”

Has been working with this project the last 3 years.

    Interesting idea. The title reminds me of that book by Gerald Durrell ‘my family and other animals’.
    My concern is that stylistically it’s a little all over the place. I always have a problem with mixing B/W and colour. Looking forward to seeing more.

    I really enjoyed this series, especially how non-photographic some of the images are. I don’t mind the mixing of styles, in fact that’s why it strikes me as unique. It eschews a continuity of style that is so often confused for content. The b&w shots are strong and their “photographic”ness make the series lyrical, but then the color snapshots whip us back into the world creating a sense of malignant ordinariness.
